Cataloguing the Zeri Foundation collections is a philological operation.
Information entered in the database is closely bound up with the notes found in the photographic documents as well as with the archiving ordering imposed on their materials by the creators of the various collections. The data reflect their critical approach as historians.
In particular, the information provided by Federico Zeri in his handwritten notes on the photos, in his attachments, in his writings, or through photographic classification is the main reference for cataloguers.
Thus, the name of the artwork creator which appears first in the entries is nearly always what Zeri proposed in his annotations or what can be deduced from the folder in which the photographic reproduction is stored. Differing proposals are given in the section Other attributions and are accompanied by the respective reasons, in most cases confirmed by the bibliography. Oral opinions of various scholars communicated to the Foundation are not reported.
The Artwork Location section provides information on the latest known location which may not be the current one.
The Foundation is gradually updating these data. You can contribute by using the Add an update button on the top right corner and at the bottom of each page.
Unless made known by the bibliography, the name and address of collectors and antiquarians who possess the works depicted are not revealed when they date back less than seventy years before the entry was compiled.
The Foundation does not accept donations of individual photographs, even if more recent and of better quality than those kept in its archives.
The Foundation does not possess any artwork figuring in these photos.
